OUR SERVICES AND POLICIES

Our staff is committed to ensuring that our patrons are happy customers! We offer numerous services for our patrons and most recently added notary service. Brief explanations of each are listed below. In addition, there are explanations of our policies concerning loan periods, fines and lost or damaged items. If you have any questions concerning any of these, please contact a staff member and we will be happy to assist you.

- Library Cards -

Love Your Library Card!
  • A free library card is available to all Old Tappan residents ages 5 and older.
  • Identification with proof of residency is needed when applying for a card.
  • The library card will be honored at all libraries in the BCCLS system.
  • Additionally, if you would also like to access libraries in Morris and Passaic counties, please ask at the library for a green HRLC label for your card.
  • Replacement of a lost card is $2.00.

Please Borrow Our Books!

- Reserves and Renewals -

Request a Book!
  • With a valid library card, requests can be made via the BCCLS homepage at www.bccls.org; by phone at (201) 664-3499; or you can reserve an item in person at the library. Please limit requests and reserves to eight per day.
  • With the exception of new DVDs, all items can be renewed two times. You may renew online with your library card and PIN. If you do not have a PIN, please call or stop by the library and we will set one up for you. You may also call the library or renew in person.

- Book Returns and Late Fees -

  • During library hours, please return your items at the circulation desk.
  • If you are returning books when the library is closed, please place your materials in the book drop just outside the front door.
  • Late fees for books, audio books, magazines and music cds are ten cents each, per day. Popular and foreign DVDs are $1.00 per item per day. Non fiction and juvenile DVDs are 25 cents per item per day. The maximum fine is $5 per item.
  • If you have fines over $10 on your library card, your card will be blocked in BCCLS and you will be unable to borrow or request items at all libraries. Payment of the fines will reactivate your library card.

- Lost Items -

Oops!
  • Please advise a library staff member of you lose or damage an item. You will be charged a reasonable replacement fee. Your library privileges will be suspended until you either pay a replacement fee or provide the library with a new copy of the item.

- Printing, Copying, Faxing, Notary Services -

  • Copies are 10 cents each for computer or copy machine. Please pay at the circulation desk.
  • Faxes are $1.00 for the first page and 50 cents for any additional pages.
  • We provide notary services with a charge of $1.00 per page. Please ask for Denise.

- Internet Access -

Surf the Web!
  • Cablevision provides the library with internet access for desktop computers and wireless internet access for personal laptop computers.
  • Although we provide wireless internet access for your use, we are not qualified to provide technical support.

- Computer Use -

  • Due to the limited number of public computers, we currently do not allow patrons to play games on the computers.
  • We enforce fair usage of the computers. If patrons are waiting, you are limited to 30 minutes on the computers.
  • Children ages 8 and under must have a parent assist them when using the computers.
  • If a staff member views inappropriate material on the computer screen, you will be asked to immediately end your internet session.
